CORNING – Wineglass Marathon officials announced that both the full and half marathon races for 2013 have filled to capacity. More than 4,500 runners have registered, representing 41 states, including Hawaii and Alaska. There are 300 runners from Canada, and additional runners from a number of other foreign countries, including Mexico, Panama, and Khuzestan. The races will be held Sunday, October 6.

"Both the Marathon and Half sold out before Memorial Day weekend this year," said Sheila Sutton, Co-Director of Wineglass Marathon. "This was by far the earliest we have sold out and with our largest field to date. We are humbled by the number of runners requesting to still get in."

Sutton and her co-director Mark Landin opted to open some more slots for runners several weeks ago, but those were snagged in hours.

In its 32nd year, the Wineglass Marathon has grown wildly popular among runners – its registration nearly tripling in the last five years. Both the beautiful fall foliage and the downhill elevation of the Bath-to-Corning course make the Wineglass a favorite among runners trying to achieve Boston qualifying times.

"We are seeing a lot of large running clubs and groups coming again this year," said Sutton, "as well as lots of runners who have Wineglass on their 'Bucket List.' We are glad that others are realizing what we know to be true: the Wineglass Marathon/Half is a great race and Corning and the Fingers Lakes is a great 'destination race' location!"

Introduced in 2011, the half marathon is also gaining popularity, attracting as many runners as the full this year. Sutton says the distance (13.1 miles) has become the most popular for runners and particularly for women.

"The Wineglass has always been a big draw for women runners who often make it a girls' weekend," Sutton said, "but even we were surprised that 73% of the runners in the half and 53% in the full are women."

Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer for Runner's World magazine, will be in Corning throughout the weekend to talk to community groups and runners. An author, coach and adventurer, Yasso has run marathons on every continent and will be running the Wineglass full marathon on October 6th. His "Yasso 800s" are a widely utilized marathon training technique.

Registration is still open for the Wineglass 5K on Saturday, October 5th. To register, visit www.wineglassmarathon.com.
