Wineglass Marathon Gives Back In A Big Way!

Tuesday, December 15, 2015

Corning, NY; The Wineglass Marathon is proud to announce the donation of over $135,000 to local non-profit and civic organizations.

This year, funds collected by the marathon were distributed to over 65 organizations in the surrounding area, including school groups, athletic teams, Scout troops, service organizations, volunteer fire departments, the Corning YMCA and American Red Cross. The largest donation was $80,000 to the Villages of Riverside and Painted Post for replacement and widening of the bike trail; a 1.1 mile path included in both the full and half marathon routes.

"It is an honor and privilege to have so many incredible organizations stepping up to be part of Wineglass Weekend," added Sheila Sutton, Wineglass Marathon Co-Director. "In appreciation of the unrelenting community support and the effort to make the marathon a repeated success, we are proud to be able to give back."

Over 2,000 volunteers help make the Wineglass Marathon a memorable race experience for runners. "This speaks to the community nature of this marathon and outpouring of volunteer support we have to make this race safe and enjoyable," said Chris Sharkey, Board President. 2015 Wineglass Weekend drew a record number of runners and enjoyed international attention from the running community.

The Wineglass Marathon began the tradition of giving back to the community five years ago. Since that time, the Wineglass Marathon has donated nearly $250,000 to area school groups, non-profit and service organizations for their event help and support.

2016 marks the 35th anniversary of the Wineglass Marathon. Signups for the October 2, 2016 Full and Half marathons exceeds 2,000 runners since registration opened on December 1, 2015.
