The Steuben County Sheriff's Office and the Wineglass Marathon are proud to announce the formation of the Steuben County Sheriff's Office Police Mountain Bicycle Patrol. The Wineglass Marathon generously donated the bicycles and equipment used for Steuben County Deputies to be able to be trained and begin bicycle patrol during special events, the Steuben County Fair and the Wineglass Marathon. The Bicycle patrol will patrol the one way section of SR 415 in the Town of Erwin during the Wineglass Marathon in an effort to further increase the safety of the residents and runners. The Wineglass Marathon will host approximately 6000 runners this year, on Sunday October 4th 2015. "We are excited to have these deputies helping to keep runners and the public safe on October 4," said Sheila Sutton, Wineglass Co-Race Director. "We couldn't run this event without the help and collaboration of our many law enforcement partners!"
The participating Deputies recently completed training and certification for the patrol use of police mountain bicycles in accordance with NYS Division of Criminal Justice standards. Bicycle patrol will be used to enhance uniformed patrol during special events, parades and community gatherings. Bicycle patrol enhances the ability of the Deputy Sheriff to interact with the public, be more approachable and create more one on one communication during events. Deputy Brooke Payne and Deputy Michael Ramirez attended training in June 2015 to receive certification for the use of the patrol bicycles.
